AGUILERA

The Sidney & Bern Davis Art Center opens its doors for four week-long summer camps focusing on art for ages 6 and up and ropes for ages 9 and up. Aspiring artists and musicians are invited to join the coolest and most creative arts hub in the world for learning, performance and exhibition experiences.

With an emphasis on art, weeks one, two and four of Create-ED will help develop individual skills, creativity and teamwork through exploration, collaborative group projects and facilities designed to enrich students’ appreciation of the visual arts using a variety of media.

The arts program includes learning about the importance of sustainability and planning and designing installations and exhibitions. Students will create art through ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking and technology. An exhibition and reception for the public will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the Friday of each art camp week.

The third week of Create-ED will be for intermediate and advanced string players, with musicians divided into two classes with solo and ensemble opportunities, guest teachers, music history and theory, and games. The week will end with a concert.

Create-ED’s instructors are professional artists and educators who have been part of the Southwest Florida arts community for many years:

¦ Caesar Aguilera is an artist and curator of the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. He combines mechanical and durable mixed media to create elaborate portraits and intricate works of art. He is also a great muralist and gallery owner. His murals are found in schools and on commercial and municipal buildings in Lee County.

¦ Angela Hicks is a professional teacher and artist whose works and teaching integrate science and history. Her work ranges from painting landscapes and portraits to creating unique ceramic teapot sets. Her inspiration comes from years of international travel that allowed her to pursue her studies in art history and architecture after graduating from Florida Gulf Coast University.

¦ String Week will be led by SBDAC Director of Education and longtime Davis School of Music violin teacher Kara Griffith, who has offered local music students numerous camp programs since 1991. She will be joined by Cypress Lake Center for the Arts Orchestra Instructor Kayla Lisa and Edison Park Creative Arts Magnet School Violin Instructor Lisa James. Guest instructors will include Roland Forti and Vinny Conrod.

The string course is for those who play the violin, viola, cello and double bass. Students should have at least one year of ensemble experience with comfortable note-reading skills and a recommendation from the teacher. Instruction will include large and small group splits, music history and music theory lessons, multiple rehearsals, daily guest instructors, games and daily solo opportunities culminating with a showcase concert for parents and the public at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 22. ¦
