McCook House opens this weekend
CARROLLTON — The 2022 season at McCook House, 15 S. Lisbon St., begins this Friday and Saturday.

Book festival this weekend
DOVER – The Canal Town Book Festival will take place on Friday and Saturday.
The opening ceremony will take place on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Dover Public Library. Guitarist Bill Hall will perform, followed by an interview with author Julie Anne Lindsey.
A writers’ fair will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., as part of the Canal Days festival, at the corner of Wooster Avenue and Third Street. Participants can meet local authors, discover new books and win prizes.
New Philadelphia author to speak
DOVER — New Philadelphia author Dominic Gangale will speak at the Community Room of the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
A signing session will follow the program. Gangale will share how writing helped him through a period of grief and how this very personal writing experience helped him rediscover his passion for writing. Register online at www.doverlibrary.org or call the library at 330-343-6123.
When three of her five children were in college, Gangale took writing lessons. He started writing a novel, but his efforts were cut short when his wife died in 2019. He put the novel away and poured his emotions into a book he titled “The Greater the Love, the Greater the mourning is deep. After a while, Gangale’s children and grandchildren encouraged him to continue writing. He pulled out the manuscript he was working on. Last year he released “Love Me Silently”.
Youth theater classes
GREEN – Theater 8:15, 4740 Massillon Road, offers summer theater classes for young people with instructor Jim Volkert.

JACKSON TWP. – The Stark County Health Department will host a virtual event in partnership with Stark Soil and Water at 6 p.m. Wednesday on Zoom.
The presentation “So you’ve moved to the countryside: do your part, be skeptical smart!” will explore how a septic tank works, why it’s an essential part of a home, the environmental impacts of a failing system, and what maintenance is needed to ensure it lasts a long time.

Free concert Thursday
JACKSON TWP. – A free concert with the band Eric Brooke will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Jackson Township North Park Amphitheater, 7454 Community Parkway NW.

Fundraising for a photo exhibition at the museum
MASSILLON – The Clicking for a Cause photo exhibition will be on display in the lower level lobby of the Massillon museum until June 15. The Massillon Museum is located at 121 Lincoln Way E.
The exhibition is intended to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The photographers donated their matted 8 x 10 inch images for the exhibition. Each image will be offered for sale at $25; this total amount is donated to the American Cancer Society when a photograph is purchased.
Artist and former Relay For Life volunteer Jan Jordan has led the initiative for over a decade and offers her own photographs for sale.
CPR courses, safe driving courses
MASSILLON — Two free classes will soon be offered at the Stark County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Training Center, 143 First St. SE. Registration for both classes is on a first-come, first-served basis and limited to 30 people for either class.
The Massillon Fire Department will be offering American Heart Association Friends and Family CPR classes from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The course teaches the vital skills of hands-only CPR for adults, adult CPR with breathing, CPR for children, AED use for adults and children, CPR for infants, and choking relief for adults. , children and infants.
The Stark County Sheriff’s Office will offer a free safe driving course for adult drivers on May 31. Julie Dominik, Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist and Certified Driving Instructor of Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital’s Driver Rehabilitation Program, will teach a variety of safe driving practices and resources. Participants will be introduced to Stark County Safe Communities and the current Highway Safety Strategic Plan. The instructor will discuss age-related changes that can alter driving skills in addition to best practices to help them stay fit to drive.

Military dog tags, fallen heroes
MASSILLON — At the Massillon Museum’s Brown Bag Lunch program on Tuesday, retired Major George Lemon will talk about the history of military dog tags and fallen military heroes. His program will start at 12:10 p.m. and end at 12:50 p.m.
Lemon served in the US Army and National Guard. He was a commissioned senior helicopter pilot with over 3,600 flight hours. He commanded the 416th Engineer Aviation Unit and was the regimental intelligence officer for the 107th Armored Calvary.
Admission is free and no reservation is required. The museum, 121 Lincoln Way E, offers free cookies and coffee to attendees. Guests can purchase sandwiches, salads, and smoothies from the Greatness Cafe in the museum lobby or bring their own lunches.

MASSILLON – The Minding Your Business networking and vendor fair will be held from 2-6 p.m. Saturday at 48 Second St. SE. Minding Your Business is a small advertising business.
The event aims to showcase small businesses and give them the opportunity to showcase their products and services. There will be food trucks and music and plenty of small and minority businesses, as well as third-party independent consultants. The event is free for the community.

Free meals for kids in Perry
PERRY TWP. – Local schools in Perry will participate in the summer food service program.
Meals will be served at the cafeteria at Perry High School, 3737 13th St. SW, May 31 through August 5. Breakfast will be from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Meals will be free for all children.
Photo club competition, artists market
SUGAR CREEK TWP. – The Wilderness Center will combine the Nature Fest Artists’ Market with the TWC Nature Photo Club’s Foto Fest for a weekend celebrating art inspired by nature.
The events will take place June 4 and 5 at the Wilderness Center.
A variety of artists will be selling their works at the Nature Festival Artists Market. There will be activities for children and adults, including make-and-take items for children and book discussions with local authors for adults. Musicians expected at the event include the Low Gap Band, Gaetano’s Jazz Trio, Annie Yoder and Ed Marthey Jazz Piano.

The Foto Fest offers 250 to 300 photos of 40 to 50 amateur participants. Winning photos will be determined based on ballots cast by the general public attending the event, as well as a Judge’s Choice award selected by a professional photographer.
Certificates and prizes will be awarded in each of the 11 categories. The cost is $5 per photo and $3 per photo in the Youth category.
